Despite Smaug's fiery wrath destroying the town on the lake below. Despite Bilbo's and the other's desperate attempts to make him see reason. To make him keep his promise. But since reclaiming Erebor, and the vast treasure from the dragon Smaug, Thorin II Oakenshield sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the "Arkenstone".

Gandalf is rescued in Dol-Guldur by Lady Galdriel, Elrond, and Saruman. They confront their fears when Sauron reveals himself but will Gandalf be able to make it to the Lonely Mountain to warn Thorin of Sauron's masterplan? The Men of Lake and the Elves of Mirkwood join in a bloodless siege on the mountain while Thorin attempts to get assistance from King Dain II Ironfoot of the Iron Hills. Meanwhile, Sauron sends forth legions of Orcs and other creatures under his command in a sneak attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As the ultimate fate of Middle Earth hangs in the balance, the races of Men, Elves and Dwarves must decide whether to unite or die.

We once again land in Middle Earth exactly where we left it in the last movie: Smaug the Dragon has awoken and is headed for Laketown. No need to tell you that a wooden town against fire breath does not stand a chance. The dragon unleashes his wrath upon the Human town, but Bard the Bowman will not die without fighting. And, who knows, anything may happen...

The opening scene announces that The Battle of the Five Armies will be an epic movie. The first tip I can offer you about it is to watch it as the end of the journey. You were able to see Thorin's Company from the very beginning to what they are now, veterans from multiples skirmishes; they escaped Thranduil dungeon, fought Goblins and giant Spiders, and survived a dragon. Even Bilbo does not hesitate to fight if needed. We can see a clear progression throughout the three movies, and the actor’s performance is incredible.

Richard Armitage is no longer portraying a noble Dwarf prince, but a greedy and bitter King under the Mountain. There's a corruption in Erebor, and it slowly devours Thorin, who becomes more and more paranoid, even accusing his fellow Companions of stealing the Arkenstone.

Peter Jackson chose to make this movie as a series of duels. A few characters have a Nemesis they shall meet during this last chapter. Thorin and Azog, Legolas and Bolg, Bard and Smaug, The
Dwarves and the Orks... There is a lot of rivalries that will lead to a formidable 45 minutes long battle at the end of the movie.

Sadly, if Elves, Dwarves, and Orks have their part to play in the movie, the Humans are let down, and do not have an important place in the action. I found it very disappointing, as the title is the Battle of the Five Armies. Speaking of it, you will not see five, but more likely three armies fighting against each other, with a little glimpse of Beorn, but do not expect much more.

In conclusion, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is a very good ending chapter, which puts an end to 13 years of wandering in Middle Earth. To Peter Jackson, and the cast, thank you for this amazing journey from The Shire to Erebor.
