# 10 Batman: Arkham Knight
Batman:
Arkham Asylum and Arkham
City, two of the best action-adventure games of the last generation, gained
developer Rocksteady a reputation as one of the best companies working in the
games industry today. Arkham Origins,
not developed by Rocksteady, was a sore let down for most fans, because while
it was almost the same, it was without the attention to detail. There was no well
written story, and without the immersive, thriving world, it felt like a hollow
and unsatisfying experience. However, June 2015 marks the return of Rocksteady
to the series. Their return promises a massive open Gotham to explore, the
return of the Scarecrow, a new original villain the Arkham Knight and a fully
controllable Bat-Mobile. Taking Batman into the next generation, under Rocksteady’s
development, expect to be The Bat.

# 9 Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise
of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, a game which put a
new spin on the series, instead of the light hearted, cartoonish action from
the original games. The reboot put the focus on survival, with open sprawling
locations filled with wildlife and enemies and the supernatural hunting Lara
Croft. Following her journey from researcher to survivalist, Tomb Raider conveyed a more human,
relatable and interesting Lara Croft and it will be interesting to see what a
more hardened Lara will be like to play as.

# 8 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher games
take high fantasy and brutal combat and mix them into a fun and addicting
open-world RPG. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
takes those elements and expands on them. The third game in the series will
feature huge beasts Garalt of Rivia and the protagonist can hunt across a world
30 times larger than previous entries in the series. For those who haven’t
played the first two games, that’s a huge amount of land. In fact, it might be
one of the biggest open worlds ever created for a RPG. It should be noted that
the release for this game has been pushed back three months.

# 7 Dying Light
What began life as a Dead Island sequel instead transformed
into Dying Light – and sure, while
it's still a first-person zombie-slaying affair, there's enough here to make me
think that it'll be more lively than the series that sort-of birthed it. Dying Light is another undead survival game,
but the big hook here is a day-night cycle that affects how the zombies act and
attack (i.e. they're totally crazy when the sun sets). Use your parkour skills
to stay clear of them!

# 6 Mortal Kombat X
Mortal
Kombat is another long-running franchise that had lost a
step, but 2011's reboot really brought the fighting series back to life thanks
to overhauled action and a seriously solid story mode. With Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm Studios returns
to the series once more. They returnthi s time with each character offering
three distinct fighting styles to choose from, plus environmental interactions
and buckets and buckets of gore.

# 5 Tom Clancy’s: The Division
Even with the author
himself deceased, the Tom Clancy's gaming brand continues to explore new
avenues – and The Division could well
be its most exciting incarnation to date. Set in New York City after a pandemic
sends the U.S. into chaos, it follows a team of sleeper agents attempting to
restore order in the destroyed setting. The Division merges solo campaign and
massively multiplayer online action for what should be a powerful concoction.

# 4 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom
Pain
Metal
Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes proved an underwhelming start to
the next big MGS rollout – a very expensive extended demo, if you will – but
what I’ve seen of the full game looks downright jaw dropping. No surprise,
considering the seminal stealth-action series' pedigree, but still, the footage
of free-roaming exploration and combat, along with wild new tactics and
typically peculiar storytelling, has me thrilled for its debut.

Xbox One, PC, PS3, Xbox 360 ERSB: M
# 3 Final Fantasy XV
Once the default
example of an amazing role-playing experience, Final Fantasy has stumbled into recent years with the sleepy XIII,
and the initially botched MMO entry that was XIV. I don't fully understand the
storyline behind Final Fantasy XV
quite yet, but I’m so relieved to see that it just looks fun. A group of
powered-up chaps on a monster-killing road trip sounds miles more exciting than
what this series has pumped out otherwise in the past several years.

PS4,
Xbox One ERSB: TBD
# 2 Halo 5: Guardians
Microsoft has Halo: The Master Chief Collection to
tide over series fans with HD updates to the existing core entries, but next
year is when the first-person sensation makes its true new-gen leap. Few
details have been confirmed as of yet, but 343 Industries says Halo 5 will run on a brand new engine at
60fps and offer dedicated servers, plus Collection
buyers can get in on the multiplayer beta set to start the 29th of
December and running until the 19th of January, 2015.

# 1 Star Wars Battlefront
LucasArts tried and
failed to revive its popular online combat series on last-gen consoles, but
under EA, Star Wars Battlefront is
all set to return late next year. And who better to reboot the franchise but
Battlefield creator, DICE? We can't wait to see the many iconic locales of the
film franchise brought to life in the Rebels vs. Empire shootouts on new-gen
hardware, and considering the release timing, it's sure to be linked to Episode
VII as well.
