2014
has proven to be a spectacular year for exclusive games on Nintendo consoles.
From Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze,
Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and Super Smash
Brothers Wii U, we have seen a
steady flow of quality games on Nintendo’s console the Wii U. Though we have a
lot of abandonment from third parties over this year, we can expect more great
games from Nintendo in 2015. That being said let’s look at what game I thought
was one of my favorites in 2014.
Hyrule Warriors is a brilliant mash-up
of two series I did not think could co-exist. But I was taken by surprise at
the brilliance and utter appreciation to both series after experiencing the
magical land of Hyrule and its occupants.

Hyrule Warriors combines the hack and
slash leveling up system of the Dynasty
Warriors series and the lore and familiarity of The Legend of Zelda series. By blending these genres together, you
produce a new experience and possibly, in my opinion of course, game of the
year material. Both Koei Tecmo and Nintendo did a fabulous job meshing these
worlds together.
The
premise of Hyrule Warriors is to
choose a warrior and lead them to victory in battle with a set list of
guidelines to be achieved by you or with a friend. Whether it be simply defeat
300 foes or answer the 3 questions correctly these challenges can be, well
quite challenging. Here lies the appeal of the game to unlock character’s weapons
and items that can help you continue your journey and take on these challenges
in new ways. Just like life you have many challenges, and I believe this game
has a way we can overcome them even in real life. To me a game that can also
teach me to not give up on some aspects in my life deserves a spot at game of
the year.

Most
of the things I hear about people not truly liking or appreciating the game are
that it is repetitive. Yes, you do have to repeat levels and missions to obtain
everything in the game; but to me this means to me that it has a high replay
value. I know this is not every one’s style of gaming, and that’s fine, but I
just want to convey why I think this game should be considered a contender for
game of the year.
Hyrule Warriors has met my expectations
and has excelled them with the release of new DLC (downloadable content). Every time I think I have completed a task,
mastered a mission, or unlocked everything imaginable, Nintendo and Koei Temco
surprise us with new things. Such as the new characters and weapons through
DLC, obtaining items and characters in the extensive Adventure Mode, and my
favorite unlocking the spinner weapon for link using his Amiibo.

With such support
and replay value this game deserves a spot among the finest. What I really want
to see from the creation of Hyrule
Warriors, is the emergence of other mash-ups and Nintendo collaborations. Other
attempts might not live up to other’s standards but with each attempt and out
of the box thinking, we will surely see more quality masterpieces slashing
their way to the top.
Happy New Year
everyone and remember to #Keepitnerdy
