Call it childhood love
Yoshi is a name everybody in the gaming world
has heard of I’m sure. Even if you are not a gamer, you may have kids speaking
of him today. This green yet multi-colored dinosaur looking character had been
the highlight of my gaming experience in 2014 when he made his latest
appearance in Yoshi’s New Island this
past March.
The original Yoshi’s Island DS came out in North America in November 2006. The game
focus was on finding baby Luigi that had been kidnapped by Kamek, (that
shameful reoccurring bad guy) the game also featured baby Peach, baby Donkey
Kong, baby Mario, baby Wario and I believe baby Bowser. It is a remake of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island,
which was released in 1995 on Super Nintendo and had the same scenario.

Yoshi’s
New Island begins with a stork carrying
two babies, Mario and Luigi. When Luigi gets kidnapped again by Kamek, here
begins Yoshi and baby Mario’s quest to find him, but this time through new
worlds and enemies.
The new game has six worlds to travel through,
but Yoshi and baby Mario must out for enemies such as Fishin’ Lakitu, Grim
Leecher, Piranha Plants, Big Beanie, Count Fang and of course Kamek.
Cool items you collect during gameplay include
your classic coins, egg blocks, stars, smiley flowers and winged clouds.

One very cool aspect of the game is being able
to create a super-sized egg to throw around certain levels, as well as having
Yoshi transform into helicopters, a bobsled, jackhammer and other things to
help you get through each world in style.
Honestly, at first I felt like six worlds was
going to be too many to keep my attention span, however by the time I hit the
last castle, I felt they could have went with eight worlds. No matter though,
perhaps that is why I completed the game for once, ha!
With this game I found it easy to navigate and
the button control was not a problem, but why I say this is my favorite game of
2014 is because it is the only game this year I sat down and beat entirely. It
kept my interest until the very end and that, my friends, is why I love it.

Needless to say, Yoshi is also one of my
favorite characters and as a kid I used to select him in Mario Kart because I
firmly believed he had to be the
fastest! All in all, Yoshi is just one cool dude.
If I have sparked your interest in the game or
all things Yoshi, you can go to www.yoshisnewisland.nintendo.com to learn more about him.
