There is no doubt that Helena Bonham Carter is one of the greatest actresses to grace the screen (especially for anyone who is a devoted fan of Tim Burton). Carter generally plays eccentric and fantastical characters laced with just the right amount of darkness. For a woman who grew up wanting to be one of Charlie's girls, she is certainly no sweet angel in her roles.
Until now: Well, technically, she isn't an angel in her new movie, but the new role catches her fans off guard. Carter is not playing the role of the Wicked Stepmother, instead, she plays the role of the Fairy Godmother in the new Disney film, Cinderella. But really, with all of the roles Helena has played, the Wicked Stepmother just doesn't suit her. Helena's roles aren't evil, after all (except as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series films and The Queen of Hearts in Burton's version of Wonderland.) Helena is truly best suited for this role. After all, the Fairy Godmother is much more fantastical than that crotchety step-mother.
So, if anyone says this is a strange role for Carter to play, I will have to heartily disagree. It's nice to see Helena in a role that isn't frosted heavily with darkness.
