Movie Review- The Villain. ~ Can Love Survive Corruption?

Indian films are growing in popularity among people worldwide. When asked why, fans state Indian films (Bollywood) possess different characteristic than those of Hollywood. “Indian films bring variety of tastes to us. We are accustomed to Hollywood film’s action/thriller and horror settings. But Indian films bring romance, comedy and vibrant Indian culture into the table.” Indian film “A Villain” certainly lived up to their expectation.

The story of the movie gives you the feel of a sad love story. What I like about this movie is that it makes you feel pity and hatred for the hero “Guru” (actor Sidharth Malhotra) at the same time. His character is quite nicely decorated with a toxic past and even darker future. The society is truly so poisonous that a thousands of criminal like him are created by corrupted politicians like “Prahlad”. These criminals can’t just break the shackle of their sins even if they wanted to. Guru’s unsuccessful desire to become a decent citizen makes me feel pity for him.

The heroine’s (Aisha- actress Shraddha Kapoor) character was created to make the hero’s character densely sadistic. She was portrayed as an angel for the hero who could break the curse of him with love and care. “I will always be with you like wind.” But her murder set in such a way to pull out great emotion.
Perhaps a criminal doesn’t deserve the peace. Then again, it shows how hard it is to get out of such a crooked strangles or maybe it’s a curse invoked on him because of his sins. People of society will just inflect thought like this from the religious point of view. They will hate the hero. But what they will fail to see is that the heroine isn’t a victim of his curse.

Another twist is brought in the movie. The black side of the recruitment process in developing countries is shown in this movie through “Rakesh Madhoker” character. Nepotism and corruption narrow his chance of getting a job. I can very easily relate this with the society. People like him turn into thieves, robbers, or monsters and contaminate the society. The heroine falls prey to him and the hero suffers the loss that can never be filled.

I blame the society for the hero’s tragic fate. The movie doesn’t depict otherwise. The movie tried to give us an idea of corruption and its impact in the society as a whole. In my view, this movie is successful in picturing this factor through the presentation of the story with the combination of right characters.
