The Battle of Plassey
bears major significance in the history of Indian sub-continent. Nawab of
Bengal and their French Allies battled British controlled East India Company on
23rd June 1757. The battle took place on the bank of the Bhagirathi River,
about 150 km north of Calcutta and south of Murshidabad, then the capital of
Bengal (presently Nadia district of Bengal). Following this event, Indian
sub-continent lost independence.

Indian sub-continent
was very wealthy and prosperous part of the world. Traders from all around the
world used to consider this region as paradise. French, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish,
and British were the traders who managed to establish a strong influence over here. Among them, the British reached this region
the earliest. By early 18th century, they had a strong presence in
western India with three forts and a well-established trading company under
Lord Clive. The secret to British success over other traders was their strategy
to ally with various princes and nawabs. They promised security to them and often
received compensation in return.

The French also
established the East India Company under King Louis
XIV. The French were
the late comers however, they were still a threat to the British with two forts
on the Carnatic coast. In 1756, the Bengal
throne was handed over to Siraj-ud-Daulah when his grandfather Alivardi Khan
died. Siraj-Ud-Daulah was suspicious of the British activity right from the
start of his rule. As such, he restricted British growth by ordering them to
stop further extension and fortification. Moreover, he attacked and captured
the British fort at Calcutta.

The British were furious
about his decision. They attacked Calcutta and regained rule over the fort. Afterwards,
they seized the French fort at Chandigarh to eliminate the French threat and
rivalry against them.
Tensions began to grow
between the French and British. The French allied with nawab to reclaim their
fort. They decided to wage war against the British to drive them away.
Nawab and their French
allies assembled a large army to march against the British. But the result of
the war was pre-set. The British anticipated their own limitation with the size
of their army and were scared of being outnumbered. They bribed nawab’s army
chiefs Mir Jafar, Jagat Shets, Omichand and Rai Durlabh. These chiefs were
present at the battleground with their army but made no move in the war. The
result to this conspiracy was nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah’s mighty army was defeated
by roughly 3000 British troops.

With this victory, the British
seized full control over the Indian-Subcontinent. They stole wealth and forced
the people of this region to implement their unjust propositions. The British
ruled this battle won territory for two hundred years and did not leave until
1947.
