Gamer. What does that
mean to you? Do you envision someone who never leaves home, stuck to their tv,
eating days old pizza, who has no friends? Or do you see regular people hanging
out and bonding over a mutual love for a hobby?
I bet if you’re not a
gamer then you saw the first scenario. And honestly, years ago I would have
agreed with you. I would have agreed with every funny meme that’s been put out
about gamers. But did you know that gamers are not just 13 year old boys or the
stereotypical man-boy who never moved out? Gamers are men, women, boys, girls,
no collar, white collar, blue collar, and everything in-between.
Gamers love the thrill
of video games. That instinct to be better, to push the limits that you can
only do while jumping out of planes, storming the beaches of Normandy, racing
while dodging puzzle boxes, or saving the planet from an alien race is something
that can only be experienced by being a gamer.
I am honestly not a
hard-core gamer. I am that gamer who falls when I try to jump something that
everyone else clears. I was that gamer that when Halo first came out, I would play with my soon to be husband and
our friends and I was bait. I gullibly would run out while they hung back,
watching for the sniper they knew would appear. And I would never fail as the
bait girl. The sniper would find me, I would die and respawn while they cleared
the area. It honestly became a running joke. But no one ever made me feel bad
for not being a good gamer.
I always was a gamer. A
gamer is someone who loves to play. A gamer understands cause and effect. A
gamer knows the bounds of imagination and pushes past it. A gamer can unite
with people all over the world with the massively multiplayer online games. A
gamer can create lasting memories at home with family and friends. Some of my
greatest memories from before marriage is sitting on my boyfriends (husband
now) bed with the Final Fantasy VII guide
and helping him through all the puzzles that he needed my help with. We got to
spend hours together and I was able to see how much gaming meant to him. For
me, it started as a love of something because I loved him. But gaming is more
than that. Gaming is fun; it’s like making a new movie or adventure every time
you log on. Gaming is making memories that can span a lifetime.
I am proudly a gamer. I
may not be a hard-core gamer, but I am a gamer. I am married to a hard-core
gamer. I have three little gamers in training who love to play stupid tablet
games with us as a family, who love Skylanders
on the Xbox, or Animal Crossing on
the Wii. We are creating memories that will last forever. We are a family of
gamers. And we play for the love of adventure, the love of family, and most
importantly, the memories that will never be forgotten.
