The Division - A True Next Gen Experience

When I first took a look at The Division trailer at E3, I was completely blown away and mesmerized. The Division combines a third-person shooter with an Open-World RPG experience like no other. With the Snowdrop engine, the drop-in, drop-out co-op, PVP, character customization and more, this game looks to be what gamers have been craving for years - a shooter that will be different, versatile and never-ending. We are now more than a year into the next-gen of gaming and yet we are still waiting for some legitimate next-gen experiences. Let's take a look and see why The Division is on its way.

First of all, the Snowdrop engine was designed for next-gen consoles only. It runs in REAL TIME, meaning that the environment around you will change based on the actions (and weather changes) that are made in the game. The first example would be the focus on destruction. During an interview, Massive said, "The destruction effect is not pre-baked in the game; it reacts differently depending on the physical forces at play." To further the point, things like glass shattering and damage to car doors will never be the same. Then there's the lighting and shading system. You will literally see the snow melt as the weather gets warmer, and the sun comes out. When the sun is out, you will also notice the impact that it makes on the lighting in the game. If you play your cards right, you will be able to use the lighting and the weather to your advantage. Each person will have a unique experience every single time they play the game.

Secondly, the character customization looks to be very intuitive. Rather than choosing a class and being forced to use certain pieces of equipment, Massive wants you to choose the path that you want to take. You can choose your own skill sets as well as your own weapons. This will allow you to define your own play style. To me, this makes finding loot much more appealing! I always hated finding a rare item in Borderlands or in Destiny, and I wasn't even able to use the darn thing because it was not for my class!!! To pull a few quotes from Barnard, "We don’t have hard archetypes in our game."  He then furthers the point, "So in the first 15 minutes of the game, we’re not asking you to choose what you are and how you want to play The Division. You’ll discover how you want to play while playing the game.”

Thirdly, the social aspect of the game is going to be an experience like we've never seen before. You get to play the game cooperatively, or you can play some PVP seamlessly. While playing the campaign, there will be PVP zones where you will be open to attack from other clans. This means that there will be specific missions that you have to do that WILL be in the "dark zones!" From reading several articles on the game, you will have the opportunity to join up with folks or to simply ambush other human folks in the game as well. They also hinted at being able to build clans and guilds from within the game. You will be able to play with 3 other people PLUS one tablet gamer (5 total per team). The person who uses the tablet will be able to use drones and be a guide for the other 4 players. "That guy" will be able to spot enemies and then be able to display them to his/her teammates. Now check this out: you WILL be able to trade your weapons and items with other players (unlike Destiny.) There are going to be tons of goodies that you will acquire throughout the game; which other players may have overlooked. This will be a great opportunity for players to interact socially and bring about the next gen experience that the community desperately needs.

One can only hope that The Division will live up to its own expectations. This is my most anticipated game for next year (and for good reason). My guess is that Ubisoft Massive releases this next gen game during the 3rd quarter of 2015. Bring it on Ubisoft. It's time for y'all to release a polished and gorgeous looking game that the community has been waiting for, for many years now. We are in the next generation. The ball is in your court.
